Just Sell One

I went to business school, but I don’t remember much of what I learned. I do remember writing a lot of mock business plans and developing a lot of mock financial projections. But I’m not sure why. The truth is as business people, we’ve been trained to obsess over long term planning. How many entrepreneurs spend countless hours writing 10 year business plans complete with detailed financial projections only to eventually put those plans in a drawer on their way to a day job that they hate?

Instead of spending all that time trying to predict the future, just go out and sell one of whatever it is you want to sell. If you can figure out how to sell one and actually make money on it, even better. And once you sell that one, go sell another one. Pretty soon, you’ll have a business on your hands. And along the way, you’ll make a lot of mistakes and you’ll learn a lot of lessons and it’ll be great. And in 5 years, you’ll look back and realize how far you’ve come and how much different it is than anything you would have written into a business plan at the outset.

Quit over thinking it. Just go sell one.
